What is the Three Steps Pose (Trivikramasana)

This is the advanced level standing Hatha yoga asana. Three Steps Pose is also known as the Trivikramasana. To practice this pose, you will need to hips and leg mobility with an intense amount of cire and knee strength. This pose also called as the Standing Split Pose.

Trivikramsana was the first found in the South Indian Temple Wall as a dancing pose from one of the classical dance forms that is Bharatnatyam. The name Trivikramasana come from the sanskrit phrase where, Trivikrama means, “three sides” and Asana means, “posture”.

According to the Hindu Scriptures, Trivikrama is a concept of three steps in the Vishnu Sukta  from Lord Vishnu mentioned inside the Rigveda. There are three steps that mentioned in the Hindu mythology where first step is earth, second is atmosphere and the third step is covered the sky.

How to Perform Trivikramasana?

This is the advanced level yoga pose involves balancing on one leg by raising the other leg.

Here is the steps by step instructions of Three Steps Pose:

  1. To start this pose by standing straight in the floor with your feet together, in Tadasana.
  2. Your arms by the sides of the body and  focus on your balance.
  3. slowly transfer the weight on to your left leg.
  4. Bend the right knee and lift the right leg towards the chest.
  5. Engage your core to maintain the balance.
  6. Extend your right leg straight out in front of you.
  7. Gently raise your right leg upward as high as possible.
  8. At the same time, raising your both arms overhead and keeping them straight.
  9. Flex your right leg and  keep your left leg strong to maintain the balance.
  10. Hold this pose for a while by gazing at one point.
  11. Then, gently come out o this posture by lowering your leg and repeat with the opposite leg.
